Our hero, Rebel Mahakavi Bharathiyar, is a legendary poet, writer, journalist, socialist, teacher, and patriot who fights for freedom in India.

Apart from this, he is a great social Reformer & against the caste system according for his thought caste is an evil amount for the people.

Personal life:

Maha Kavi was born on December 18, 1882, in a brahmin family in the village of Ettayapuram in Tamil Nadu. His parents’ names are Chinnaswami Subramania Iyer and Lakshmi Ammal.

When he was seven years old, our mahakavi wrote Tamil poetry. When he was eleven years old, he wrote in a way that even smart men praised him for his depth of understanding and talent.

our mahakavi believed he needed to establish his credentials in the eleventh year. The competition took place during a special Ettayapuram Durbar session, which the Rajah (the sovereign) attended. The topic selected was “Education.” The debate was effectively won by our mahakavi & he will never forget this time in his life.

Bharathi

When Bharathi married Chellammal in June 1897, he was only a few years out of high school. Bharathi traveled to Benaras, often spelled Kashi and Varanasi.

Along with his aunt Kuppammal and her husband Krishna Sivan, he stayed there for the following two years. He quickly acquired a basic understanding of Sanskrit, Hindi, and English and successfully completed the Allahabad University Entrance Examination. The time spent in Banaras significantly altered Bharathi’s personality. He had a turban and a mustache on the outside, and he walked with a brazen swing.

Reformation of cast system :

The question is asked by mahakavi , if a person lives to change his religion he converts just by changing his god but why does the person have a restriction to change his caste?

as per mahakavi casting statement only show who is big and who is small say saying someone is small our caste that makes the other person feel low confidence & low self-esteem

So he declared that there were only two castes-men and women and nothing more than that.

And he himself has removed his sacred thread ( Upanayanam  )

Mahakavi used to drink tea from Muslim-owned shops. He used to have a friendly relationship with a Christian family that went to church and also participated in all occasions of a festival; he supported Dalits (low-caste people ) to enter temples.

He had to contend with criticism from his neighbors for all of his measures. But Bharathi was quite clear that the Indian people could not get independence until they banded together as the offspring of Mother India. He supported women’s freedom, gender equality, and rights for women. He advocated widow remarriage and opposed child marriage and dowries.

Why Bharathi is called a ‘Mahakavi’?

Let’s see the fantastic poem of mahakavi :

1)     அச்சமில்லை (Achamillai)  the fearlessness

Mahakavi is more respected due to his emotional poet of Achamillai Achamillai acham enbathu illaye

I have no fear, I have no fear, even a speck of fear in me! Even if every human in this world stands up against me, or  denigrated and slandered, Even if I obtained a life where I have to beg to even eat, Even if I lose all the objects that I had desired.   This is my favorite  mahaka  kavi poem that he try to express the strong feeling of fearlessness & real purpose of life

  2)   நான் வீழ்வேனென்று நினைத்தாயோ? (Naan Veezhven Endru Ninaithaiyo?)

Spending a lot of time looking for meals, talking about pointless things, gossiping Always worrying about the future without taking any action, putting other people in danger, getting older and older, having grey hair, and eventually dying, Did you think I would fall suit and be struck down? I’ll ask you for a few favors, which you must grant today. My past transgressions should perish without rebirth. You’ll change me into a new person. Make me feel at ease Make my brain agile and focused. Make me happy and satisfied, forever   Most of his poem are asking favor from god not for him but for all living creatures in this earth including a grass need to live happy life without suffering
